Hello lovely viewers!

Wie geht es dir?

My name is Katherine Louey and I am in Year 10 studying at Hornsby Girls High School. I am very grateful to be provided the opportunity to embark on an overseas exchange to Austria from January 2020 to January 2021. My gratitude extends to the generous sponsorship of the West Pennant Hills/Cherrybrook Rotary Club who have made this journey possible.

Growing from toddler to teenager, a predominant subject in my life has been music. From Mozart’s flawlessly composed symphonies to the nostalgic melodies of Hans Zimmer’s ‘Spirit’ soundtrack, music has splashed vibrant colours into my life. As a young aspiring musician, I am taking an audacious leap to study a year abroad in Austria where I will be staying with a few host families and attending a foreign school. This magnificent country has birthed the significant names of Schubert, Haydn, Strauss and of course Mozart, who have collectively enriched the classical music culture. With the combination of the esteemed Vienna Philharmonic, outdoor stage events, and street performers, music positively wafts through every Austrian alleyway.

Although the idea of being taught biology, chemistry, and physics in the unfamiliar language of German has me slightly nervous, I am hoping that this experience will bring growth toward my independence and maturity especially as I leave the comfort of familiarity behind. From saying goodbye to my Australian friends, family, and school, to establishing new connections, writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe inspires me with his remark, “Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.”

Perhaps Austria will bring with it a new spark of musical magic.

Finally, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the West Pennant Hills/Cherrybrook Rotary Club for sponsoring me and to my parents for supporting me in this process. I am looking forward to what next year entails.

Bis später!
